well I suppose that it depends on what your degree is going to be and if you like working on the computer.
Pros’s - I liked the fact I could work on assignments and discussions when it worked for me, rather than attending class on a specific schedule.
Classes usually went faster than ground classes and they tend to use more visual things (media, video…) but I’m a visual learner.
I had classmates from all over the world, which was interesting as we each brought a different perspective of the situation or topic to be learned.
Con’s - Cost some on-line universities are expensive, you will have to determine what college/university works best for you and the cost.
You are tied to a computer, if you have good internet access and a good computer then you’ll probably be fine, but if you are going to the local library then I would consider other options.
The quicker pace can also be a downside, as this means you have more information, tests, and papers due quicker, which is something you should consider as you evaluate your situation.
I personally prefer the on-line format as it works well for me, but you must (repeat to yourself for emphasis) be dedicated to staying on task. For example if you have readings, a personal paper and a team paper due you must keep working on them or suddenly you’ll be out the points and the grade. One site I used when looking for various colleges and universities is attached and it’s fairly good source.
I’ve taken a few online college courses. While it is great being able to log on at whatever time you want to get things done, I don’t think it’s right for everyone.
One thing that I’ve noticed is that it tends to be a lot more work. In my classes, we would be assigned a couple chapters to read and we didn’t have the professor to emphasize the things that would be on the test. I spent a lot of time focusing on learning all the wrong things.
A good thing is that USUALLY the tests and quizzes are online. This means that you can take it in a relaxed environment you are comfortable in. This also means that many students will choose to make it into an open book test.
One problem you might have is that some classes require you to go on campus for tests. Also, all the classes you need may not be offered online. Another thing to consider is that taking one class online will probably be different than taking another one online (I took English, but I wouldn’t dare to take math and I don’t know that I’d want to take upper level non-gen ed classes online).
You might just try taking a few courses online to see how you like it before you make any major decisions.
